Ingredients

  • 5 egg whites
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • red decorating sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 250°F (120°C).
  2. Beat egg whites in a medium-sized bowl until frothy.
  3. Add salt and cream of tartar; beat until soft peaks form.
  4. Gradually add granulated sugar while beating until meringue is stiff and glossy.
  5. Line a baking sheet with butter and flour or parchment paper.
  6. Fill a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip with the meringue.
  7. Pipe out star shapes approximately 1 inch apart onto the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Sprinkle with red and green decorating sugar.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes until firm but not browned.
  10. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
