Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Mix 2 cups of flour and yeast together in a bowl.
  2. In a pan, heat milk, sugar, shortening, and salt just until warm and stir constantly.
  3. Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture, then add the egg.
  4. Beat with a hand mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, then on high speed for 3 minutes.
  5. Stir in the remaining flour and mix with a spoon.
  6. Knead on a floured board for 5 minutes.
  7. Shape into a ball and place in a bowl. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  8. Punch down the dough. Shape into rolls and place in a greased baking pan.
  9. Let rise again for 30 minutes.
  10. Bake at 400°F (200°C) until brown, about 15 minutes.
  11. Brush with butter before serving.
