Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup grits
  • 2 tablespoons Crisco
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 4 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  1. Pour cooked grits into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add Crisco; let cool slightly.
  3. Add part of the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast to the bowl.
  4. Pour in warm water and beat with an electric mixer for a few minutes.
  5. Add more flour gradually while beating by hand until the dough is workable.
  6. Turn out the dough onto a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a large greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size.
  8. Punch down the dough and shape it into pans.
  9. Let the shaped dough rise again until doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes until golden brown.
