- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Sift dry ingredients: flour, salt, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder.
- Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
- Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk.
- Mix just until ingredients are combined and a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
- On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently until it is soft and elastic, not sticky.
- Pat the dough out to about 1/2-inch thickness.
- Cut out biscuits using a cookie cutter or drinking glass.
- Place the biscuits 1/2-inch apart on a lightly greased baking sheet for a crisp crust or touching for a softer biscuit.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
