Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 5 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Sift dry ingredients: flour, salt, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk.
  5. Mix just until ingredients are combined and a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently until it is soft and elastic, not sticky.
  7. Pat the dough out to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  8. Cut out biscuits using a cookie cutter or drinking glass.
  9. Place the biscuits 1/2-inch apart on a lightly greased baking sheet for a crisp crust or touching for a softer biscuit.
  10. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
