These classic, flaky scones are quick to make with simple ingredients, perfect for breakfast or tea time. Light, buttery, and slightly sweet, they suit all occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 to 1 cup milk
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Beat together the egg and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add 3/4 cup of milk and the melted butter to the egg mixture and stir to combine.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the self-rising flour and salt.
  4. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the egg-milk mixture.
  5. Add up to an additional 1/4 cup of milk if needed, until a soft dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface and gently knead it a few times.
  7. Pat the dough flat to about 3/4-inch thickness.
  8. Use a 1 1/2-inch cutter to cut out scones and place them close together on a floured baking sheet.
  9. Bake at 500°F (260°C) for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
