Ingredients

  • 1 (3 strip) pkg. yeast
  • 3 c. water
  • 3 c. milk
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • 16 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. shortening

Instructions

  1. Place yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in a quart bowl.
  2. Add warm water (95° to 98°F) to the bowl with yeast and sugar.
  3. Let it sit for 20 minutes or until doubled in size.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredients: milk, sugar, salt, flour, and shortening.
  5. Mix well and add the yeast, sugar, and water mixture.
  6. Knead the dough by hand until smooth and light in texture.
  7. Cover the dough and let it rise for 45 minutes in a warm location or until doubled in size.
  8. Divide the dough into 5 equal parts.
  9. Fold each part and place in bread pans.
  10. Let the dough rise for 30 minutes in the pans.
  11. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.
