Ingredients

  • 1 cup dark syrup
  • 1 cup shortening or butter
  • 1/2 cup black coffee
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons aniseed, crushed
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons aniseed flavoring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Roll the mixture into long, thin rolls using wax paper.
  3. Refrigerate the rolls overnight.
  4. Slice the chilled rolls into 1/4 to 1/2-inch slices.
  5. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 10 to 15 minutes until lightly browned.
  6. Cool the cookies and store in an airtight container.
  7. Will keep indefinitely.
