Instructions
- Heat oven to 350°.
- Mix shortening, sugar, egg, molasses and anise or almond flavoring.
- Measure flour.
- Blend dry ingredients and mix in gradually with hands.
- Knead dough until right consistency for molding.
- If dough seems too soft, refrigerate until firm.
- Mold into "snakes" 3/4-inch in diameter and cut into 14-inch bits with floured knife and arrange on a greased baking sheet.
- Bake for 12 minutes.
- Cookies will harden on standing and should have a nutlike crunch.
- Store in an airtight container.
