Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. molasses or honey
  • mixture 3 drops anise oil and 1 Tbsp. hot water or almond flavoring instead
  • 3 1/3 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°.
  2. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, molasses and anise or almond flavoring.
  3. Measure flour.
  4. Blend dry ingredients and mix in gradually with hands.
  5. Knead dough until right consistency for molding.
  6. If dough seems too soft, refrigerate until firm.
  7. Mold into "snakes" 3/4-inch in diameter and cut into 14-inch bits with floured knife and arrange on a greased baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 12 minutes.
  9. Cookies will harden on standing and should have a nutlike crunch.
  10. Store in an airtight container.
