Pirohy are tender, homemade dumplings filled with your favorite ingredients, boiled to perfection, then topped with sautéed onions and butter for a comforting, hearty meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • warm water

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder into a bowl.
  2. Add egg and enough warm water to form a soft dough.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 5 minutes.
  4. Let the dough rest for approximately 10 minutes.
  5. Roll the dough quite thin, then cut into 2-inch squares.
  6. Place a teaspoon of filling in the center of each square and fold corners to form triangles.
  7. Seal the edges well by pinching.
  8. Cook the pirohy in boiling salted water.
  9. Simmer until they float to the top, about 7 minutes.
  10. Drain the pirohy and fry chopped onions in butter.
  11. Pour the sautéed onions over the cooked pirohy and serve.
