Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1 pint milk, scalded and cooled to lukewarm
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 7 cups flour
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm milk.
  2. Add 2 cups of flour and let stand in a warm place for about 1/2 hour.
  3. Beat the eggs, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and salt until light.
  4. Add the egg mixture to the yeast mixture, then incorporate 5 cups of flour.
  5. Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat to 1/2-inch thickness.
  7. Cut into rounds using a doughnut cutter.
  8. Cover and let rise again until doubled and light.
  9. Fry in deep fat at 375°F until golden brown on both sides.
  10. Drain on paper towels.
  11. When cool, cut halfway through and fill with jelly, then sprinkle with powdered sugar.
