Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Beat the egg whites until stiff; set aside.
  2. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add 2 of the egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Add flour and milk alternately, beginning and ending with flour, until all is incorporated.
  5. Add vanilla and dissolved soda water to the batter.
  6. Gently fold in the beaten egg whites.
  7. Pour the batter into three greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
