Prize Orange Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1/2 c. sour milk
  • 2 c. "Five Roses" all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1 tsp. hot water
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c. seedless raisins
  • 1 fairly large orange
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Squeeze orange and add juice to milk.
  2. Put remainder of orange plus the raisins through a food grinder.
  3. Mix other ingredients except egg whites as for a "butter cake".
  4. Add minced fruit and chopped nuts.
  5. Lastly, add stiffly beaten egg whites.
  6. Bake in prepared 9 x 13-inch pans at 350° for 25 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test.
