Ingredients

  • 4 cups Flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 3 tsp Baking Powder
  • 3 tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups Milk
  • Salad Oil for Deep Frying

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour, measure, and sift again with salt, baking powder, and sugar.
  2. Cut in the shortening, then add milk to make a soft dough just firm enough to roll.
  3. Cover the bowl and let the dough stand for 30 to 60 minutes.
  4. Roll the dough ¼ inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
  6. Heat about 1 inch of salad oil in a frying pan to 370°-380°F.
  7. Add a few pieces at a time; turn immediately to puff evenly.
  8. Turn back to brown on both sides, then drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve warm with butter or honey.
