- Mix together the salt, powdered alum, and cream of tartar in a large white-ware pitcher.
- Pour in two quarts of water and stir until the mixture is dissolved.
- Transfer the mixture to clean bottles and cork them tightly.
- Before using, shake the bottles well.
- Pour some of the liquid into a bowl and wash the silver all over with an old, soft fine linen cloth.
- Let the silver stand for about 10 minutes.
- Rub the silver dry with a buckskin cloth to make it look like new.
