- Combine sugar, water, and mild vinegar in a saucepan and stir until sugar is dissolved.
- Cook without stirring until the mixture reaches very firm ball stage.
- Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla as flavoring.
- Pour the hot mixture into a well greased shallow pan and let it cool enough to handle.
- Pull the cooled taffy until it becomes white and firm.
- Roll into ropes and cut into pieces with scissors or a knife.
