Ingredients

  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 cups scalded milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 6 cups sifted flour
  • 4 tablespoons shortening

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the cake yeast in 1/4 cup water.
  2. Scald the milk and let it cool slightly.
  3. Mix the yeast mixture with the scalded milk, salt, sugar, and shortening.
  4. Gradually add sifted flour to form a tender dough, kneading well.
  5. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide into equal portions.
  7. Shape each portion into a roll and place on a greased baking sheet.
  8. Let the rolls rise again until nearly doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from oven and serve warm.
