- Dissolve the cake yeast in 1/4 cup water.
- Scald the milk and let it cool slightly.
- Mix the yeast mixture with the scalded milk, salt, sugar, and shortening.
- Gradually add sifted flour to form a tender dough, kneading well.
- Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Punch down the dough and divide into equal portions.
- Shape each portion into a roll and place on a greased baking sheet.
- Let the rolls rise again until nearly doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and serve warm.
