Ingredients

  • 1 gallon cucumbers
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 gallon vinegar
  • 3/4 cup alum
  • 1 box pickling spice
  • sugar
  • boiling hot water

Instructions

  1. Wash and place whole cucumbers in a glossy stone jar.
  2. Put salt in 1 gallon of boiled water.
  3. Pour the salted water over the cucumbers and let stand for 24 hours.
  4. Pour off the brine; add powdered alum to 1 gallon of hot water. Let stand for 24 hours.
  5. Pour off the water.
  6. Add 1 gallon of hot clear water and let stand for 24 hours.
  7. Pour off the water.
  8. Boil 1 gallon of vinegar with pickling spices.
  9. Pour the hot vinegar mixture over the cucumbers and let stand for 9 days.
  10. Remove cucumbers from vinegar.
  11. Slice cucumbers into round slices.
  12. Place slices in jars, layering with sugar.
