Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice or brandy
  • 1 1/3 cups butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Sift flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add lemon juice or brandy to the dry ingredients.
  4. Cut in butter using a pastry blender; mix with a spoon until smooth dough forms.
  5. Flour hands and pinch off small pieces of dough.
  6. Roll each piece into pencil-thick strips about 3 inches long.
  7. Twist two strips together and shape into a ring.
  8. Mix chopped almonds and remaining sugar on waxed paper.
  9. Press the rings into the almond mixture, almond side up.
  10. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake for about 8 minutes, until lightly golden.
  12. Do not brown.
