Ingredients

  • 9 cups unsifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups milk, scalded
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 4 beaten eggs
  • 2 packages yeast, dissolved

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water or use powdered milk with warm water as an alternative.
  2. Combine the flour, salt, sugar, and the dissolved yeast in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add the scalded milk (or powdered milk mixture) and beaten eggs to the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix thoroughly until a smooth dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  8. Place the loaf in a greased bread pan or on a baking sheet.
  9. Let the dough rise again until nearly doubled, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
