Ingredients

  • 6 lb. fat
  • 1 can high test lye (about 13 oz.)
  • 2 1/2 pt. cold water

Instructions

  1. Pour cold water into small enamel, stone, or glass containers.
  2. Dissolve the high test lye in the water, stirring gently with a wooden spoon until dissolved.
  3. Mix the lye water in a well-ventilated room, but not in a breeze.
  4. Let the lye water cool until the container feels cool to the hand.
  5. Melt the fat in an enamel pan and stir with a wooden spoon.
  6. Cool the fat until the spoon begins to leave a track in the mixture.
  7. Pour the lye solution into the melted fat in a small steady stream, stirring until the mixture is honey-like in texture. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Pour into molds or boxes lined with wax paper.
  9. Cover the soap and let stand for 24 hours.
  10. Cut into bars.
  11. Place soap in open air, avoiding drafts and cold.
  12. Let cure for several weeks before using.
