Uncooked lye soap is a traditional, handcrafted soap made from fats and lye, offering a natural cleansing experience with a gentle, nourishing feel. Ingredients
- 6 lb. fat ⓘ
- 1 can high test lye (about 13 oz.)
- 2 1/2 pt. cold water
Instructions
- Pour cold water into small enamel, stone, or glass containers.
- Dissolve the high test lye in the water, stirring gently with a wooden spoon until dissolved.
- Mix the lye water in a well-ventilated room, but not in a breeze.
- Let the lye water cool until the container feels cool to the hand.
- Melt the fat in an enamel pan and stir with a wooden spoon.
- Cool the fat until the spoon begins to leave a track in the mixture.
- Pour the lye solution into the melted fat in a small steady stream, stirring until the mixture is honey-like in texture. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Pour into molds or boxes lined with wax paper.
- Cover the soap and let stand for 24 hours.
- Cut into bars.
- Place soap in open air, avoiding drafts and cold.
- Let cure for several weeks before using.
