Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • sesame seed or coarse salt

Instructions

  1. Measure warm water into large mixing bowl.
  2. Sprinkle on yeast; stir until it looks soft.
  3. Add sugar, salt, and flour; mix and knead dough until soft and no longer sticky.
  4. Take a small ball of dough the size of an egg.
  5. Roll the dough between the palms of your hands or on the tabletop until it is as long as a snake.
  6. Twist the snake into a pretzel, letters, numbers, or any shape.
  7. Grease cookie sheets.
  8. Place twisted pretzels or designs on cookie sheets.
  9. Brush pretzels with beaten egg; sprinkle with sesame seed or coarse salt.
  10. Bake at 425°F for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden.
  11. Let cool.
