Ingredients

  • 2-1/2 cups Very Warm Water
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 3 Tablespoons Honey Or Golden Syrup (Rogers Brand Recommended)
  • 2 Tablespoons Oil Or Melted Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (I Use Himalayan Salt)
  • 2 Tablespoons Yeast
  • 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 3 cups White Flour
  • Vegetable Oil, For Frying

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the warm water, lemon juice, honey, oil, salt and yeast. Stir and let the mixture sit for a few minutes. Add flours one cup at a time. You may need more or less, depending on the altitude and humidity.
  2. Dump the dough onto a floured counter or board. Knead for about five minutes. Cut the dough into three sections. (This recipe is for three loaves of bread). Then cut each 'loaf' into about seven portions.
  3. Work the dough into balls, and then flatten the balls with your palm. Don't over work it or obsess about perfection. Set them aside to rise for a few minutes while you heat up a pan of oil. Assuming your kitchen is warm, this will give the dough enough time to rise.
  4. Heat the oil in a deep skillet or pot. Once hot, put balls of dough into the oil and cook until the bottom side is medium brown, then flip it over and cook on the other side.
  5. Place fried bread on paper towel to drain excess grease and repeat with the remaining batter. Serve with butter and Rogers Golden Syrup or honey butter. Some people eat these with cinnamon sugar or icing sugar. It is fried bread, so top it with whatever you would use for fresh homemade bread.
  6. The short version:
  7. This could be made with any of your favorite bread recipes. It's a bun-sized piece of dough flattened and fried. They are softer if you let them rise.
  8. * Rogers Golden Syrup is a Canadian product.
