Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 tart apples, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9 x 12-inch baking dish and fill the bottom with sliced apples.
  2. Mix sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon salt.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples in the dish.
  4. Sift together flour, baking powder, and 3/4 teaspoon salt.
  5. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Add milk and mix until just combined.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of the batter over the apples in the dish.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 35 minutes, until golden brown.
