- Mix the cake according to the directions on the box and bake in 2 cake layers.
- Allow the cakes to cool completely.
- Split each cake layer into two layers, resulting in four layers total.
- Mix 2 packages of frozen coconut with the sour cream and sugar.
- Set aside 1/2 cup of this coconut mixture for later use.
- Spread the remaining coconut mixture between the cake layers.
- Mix the 1/2 cup of coconut mixture with the whipped topping.
- Spread this mixture on top and around the sides of the assembled cake.
- Refrigerate the cake in an airtight container for 3 days before serving.
