Delicate angel crisps are light, sweet cookies with a hint of vanilla, perfect for tea time or special occasions, topped with nuts or cherries for added flair.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions

  1. Cream the granulated sugar, brown sugar, shortening, and egg together until well blended.
  2. Add vanilla and mix well. Gradually add the sifted flour, salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar, mixing until smooth.
  3. Form the dough into small balls about the size of walnuts.
  4. Dip the top half of each ball into water, then into granulated sugar.
  5. Place the coated dough balls on an ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Press down the center of each cookie with a finger to create a slight indentation.
  7. Decorate the center of each with a walnut half or a candied cherry if desired.
  8. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly golden.
