Anise Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 c. milk
  • 2 c. water
  • 1 1/4 c. Crisco
  • 1 oz. anise seeds
  • 5 lb. Sapphire flour
  • 2 1/2 c. sugar
  • 3 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Scald milk and water together; add Crisco and anise seeds and let cool to room temperature.
  2. Mix flour and sugar in a large bowl; make a well in the center.
  3. When cooled, pour the liquid into the well.
  4. Add yeast and sugar to warm water and let stand until frothy, almost double in volume.
  5. Pour the yeast mixture into the well.
  6. Add all the eggs and mix well.
  7. Knead until not sticky, adding more flour as needed.
  8. Divide the dough into 8 parts and place into greased 8-inch by 4-inch baking pans.
  9. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 350°F until nicely browned, about 30 minutes.
  11. Brush leftover egg whites on top of loaves to make them shiny.
