Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • warm water
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup shortening

Instructions

  1. Night before serving, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Dissolve yeast in 2 tablespoons of warm water.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and buttermilk to the dry ingredients.
  5. Stir until combined and form into a ball.
  6. Knead until nearly smooth.
  7. Cover and chill overnight.
