Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 2 green apples
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 quart milk or half and half
  • 2 tablespoons melted oleo (butter)

Instructions

  1. Combine eggs, sugar, and flour until smooth.
  2. Add milk or half and half and blend well.
  3. Set the custard mixture in the refrigerator to chill.
  4. Butter an 11 x 7 x 1 3/4-inch pan and line the bottom with sliced bread.
  5. Layer half of the chopped apples, raisins, and one-third of the custard over the bread.
  6. Repeat with the second layer of bread, apples, raisins, and custard.
  7. Top with the remaining bread slices and pour the remaining custard over the top.
  8. Drizzle melted oleo (butter) over the top.
  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 to 60 minutes until the custard is slightly firm and golden.
