Ingredients

  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 4 or 5 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Mix graham cracker crumbs and melted butter.
  2. Press the mixture into the bottom of an 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan to form the crust.
  3. Core the apples.
  4. Peel the apples and cut them into pieces.
  5. Simmer the apples with 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until just tender, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. Dissolve cornstarch in 3 tablespoons cold water and add to the apple mixture.
  7. Simmer for approximately 5 minutes until thickened.
  8. Allow the apple filling to cool.
  9. Cream the butter and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth.
  10. Blend in the all-purpose flour until the mixture becomes crumbly, forming the topping.
  11. Pour the cooled apple filling over the graham cracker crust.
  12. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  13. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes until golden and bubbly.
