Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 egg
  • milk
  • 2/3 cup crushed corn flakes
  • 5 cups sliced apples
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Cut in the Crisco shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a cup, put the egg yolk and add enough milk to measure 2/3 cup.
  4. Add the egg yolk mixture to the flour mixture and mix well.
  5. Roll out the dough into an 11 x 15-inch rectangle.
  6. Place the dough into a raised edge cookie sheet.
  7. Cover the crust with crushed corn flakes.
  8. Mix sliced apples with cinnamon and 1 1/2 cups sugar, then spread over the corn flakes.
  9. Roll out the remaining dough for the top crust and place over the filling.
  10. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg white.
  11. Bake in a 400°F oven for 40 minutes.
  12. Allow to cool slightly and then glaze before serving.
