Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cups dates, chopped
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, boil sugar, evaporated milk, butter, and salt until a little mixture forms a hard ball when dropped in cold water, about 250° on a candy thermometer.
  2. Stir occasionally to keep from scorching.
  3. Stir in chopped dates and cook until tender.
  4. Remove from heat and beat until cool and thick.
  5. Stir in chopped walnuts and vanilla.
  6. Pour half of the mixture onto a wet cloth and roll into a log shape.
  7. Repeat for the other half of the mixture.
  8. Store in the refrigerator; cut into slices to serve.
