Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 2 tablespoons Crisco
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 packages yeast
  • 1 cup warm tap water

Instructions

  1. On top of stove, cook over medium heat the milk, margarine, Crisco, 1/2 cup sugar, and salt.
  2. Do not boil; cook just long enough to melt margarine and Crisco.
  3. While this is cooling, mix together the yeast, 1 cup warm tap water, and 1/2 cup sugar.
  4. Set this aside to activate.
  5. After cooked ingredients have cooled, add the yeast mixture and enough flour to make a stiff dough, about 7 cups.
  6. Before the dough gets very stiff, add 3 eggs and mix well.
  7. Put the dough in a warm place and let it rise until doubled in size.
  8. After the dough has risen, place it on a floured surface and work in enough flour so the dough is not sticky.
  9. Roll out the dough and cut with a biscuit cutter or glass.
  10. Place the cut dough into a greased pan, then let it rise again.
  11. Bake at 350°F until the rolls are golden brown.

Tips & Substitutions

For best results, ensure your yeast is fresh for proper activation. If you don't have margarine, you can substitute with butter. For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to the dough. If you’re looking for a lighter version, you can try reducing the sugar slightly or using whole wheat flour. These rolls are perfect for serving with Granny'S Rice Pudding.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Aunt Neoma's Hot Rolls warm, brushed with melted butter for a delicious finish. They pair wonderfully with soups, stews, or a fresh salad for a complete meal. You can also enjoy them alongside a sweet dish like Apple Caramel Cake for a delightful contrast. These rolls are versatile enough to feature at any dinner table.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, you can freeze them. To reheat, wrap in foil and warm in a 350°F oven for about 10-15 minutes until heated through, ensuring they remain soft and fluffy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance and refrigerate it after the first rise. Just make sure to cover it well. When you're ready to bake, let it come to room temperature and complete the second rise before cutting and baking.

What if my rolls don't rise?

If your rolls don't rise, it could be due to inactive yeast or too cold of a rising environment. Ensure your yeast is fresh and that the warm water is not too hot, as it can kill the yeast. Try placing the dough in a warm, draft-free area to encourage rising.

Can I use a different type of fat instead of Crisco?

Absolutely! You can substitute Crisco with additional margarine or butter for a richer flavor. Coconut oil is another option that can add a unique taste, though it may alter the texture slightly. Just keep in mind that the fat you choose can affect the final taste of the rolls.
