Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon double-acting baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chopped raw apples

Instructions

  1. Put everything but the boiling water and apples into a bowl in the order given.
  2. Add boiling water and beat the batter just until smooth with an electric mixer or egg beater on half speed.
  3. Stir in the chopped, unpeeled, quartered apples.
  4. Pour into 2 greased, round cake pans.
  5. Bake in a moderate oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 30 minutes or until done.
