Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of hot sauce or some chopped bell peppers to the layers. You can substitute catfish with tilapia or cod if desired, but adjust cooking time accordingly. Ensure the bacon is crispy for maximum flavor infusion into the stew. Layering is key, so be consistent for even cooking and flavor distribution.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty catfish stew with crusty bread or cornbread for a complete meal. It pairs beautifully with peas 'n rice for a comforting side dish. Consider garnishing with fresh parsley or green onions for added color and flavor, enhancing the overall presentation.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat to avoid breaking apart the fish and potatoes. If too thick, add a splash of water or broth to loosen it up before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen catfish for this recipe?

Yes, you can use frozen catfish, but ensure it is fully thawed and drained of excess moisture before cutting it into cubes. This will help maintain the stew's texture and prevent excess water from diluting the flavor.

How do I know when the stew is ready to eat?

The stew is ready when the top layer of potato is soft and easily pierced with a fork. Avoid stirring during cooking to keep the layers intact, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully as they cook.

What can I add to make the stew spicier?

To add some heat, consider incorporating diced jalapeños or a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the layers. You could also serve the stew with a side of hot sauce for those who enjoy an extra kick.
