Ingredients

  • 6 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 large (12 oz.) can frozen orange juice, thawed
  • 1 large (46 oz.) can pineapple-grapefruit juice
  • 5 bananas, pureed in blender

Instructions

  1. Stir together the water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the thawed orange juice, pineapple-grapefruit juice, and pureed bananas; mix well.
  3. Pour the mixture into 2 1/2-gallon freezer containers or clean milk cartons.
  4. Cover and freeze at least 24 hours or up to 6 months.
  5. To serve, let thaw at room temperature about 4 hours until mixture is slushy, then add Sprite.
  6. If thawing half of the recipe, add only 2 cups of Sprite.

Tips & Substitutions

For a sweeter slush, adjust the sugar to taste, especially if your bananas are very ripe. You can substitute the pineapple-grapefruit juice with a combination of pineapple juice and grapefruit juice if needed. If you prefer a more tropical flavor, try adding coconut water or using frozen fruit like mango. Ensure the bananas are pureed smoothly for the best texture.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the slush in chilled glasses for a refreshing treat. It pairs beautifully with Spiced Apricots as a side or dessert option. For a fun twist, consider adding a splash of club soda or a fruit garnish like a slice of banana or orange on the rim. This slush is perfect for summer gatherings or brunch occasions.

Storage & Reheating

Store the slush in the freezer for up to 6 months, making sure to use airtight containers to prevent freezer burn. When ready to serve, simply let the slush thaw at room temperature for about 4 hours. If you have leftovers, re-freezing is possible, but for best texture, consume within a week after initial thawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen juice?

Yes, you can use freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh pineapple juice instead of frozen options. Just ensure to adjust the sugar level since fresh juices can vary in sweetness. The slush will have a fresher taste, but the freezing process still remains the same.

How can I make this recipe vegan?

This recipe is already vegan-friendly! Just ensure that the Sprite or any soda you use is also vegan, as some brands may have animal-derived ingredients. Feel free to experiment with different fruit juices for added flavor while keeping it plant-based.

What type of bananas work best for this recipe?

Ripe bananas work best for this slush as they provide natural sweetness and a creamy texture when pureed. Look for bananas that are yellow with a few brown spots for optimal flavor. Overripe bananas can also be used if you plan to freeze them immediately after pureeing.
