Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour and dry yeast.
  2. Heat milk, sugar, and shortening; add salt just until warm (115° to 120°), stirring constantly until shortening almost melts.
  3. Add the warm mixture to the dry ingredients; add the egg.
  4. Beat at low speed of electric mixer for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl.
  5. Beat 3 minutes at high speed.
  6. By hand, stir in the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  7. Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease the surface.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  9. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  10. Cover and let rise for 10 minutes.
  11. Shape into desired rolls.
  12. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  13. Bake on greased baking sheets or in greased muffin pans in a hot oven (400°F) for 10 to 12 minutes.
