- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour and dry yeast.
- Heat milk, sugar, and shortening; add salt just until warm (115° to 120°), stirring constantly until shortening almost melts.
- Add the warm mixture to the dry ingredients; add the egg.
- Beat at low speed of electric mixer for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl.
- Beat 3 minutes at high speed.
- By hand, stir in the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
- Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease the surface.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
- Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
- Cover and let rise for 10 minutes.
- Shape into desired rolls.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes.
- Bake on greased baking sheets or in greased muffin pans in a hot oven (400°F) for 10 to 12 minutes.
