- Mix 2 1/2 cups sugar, Crisco, margarine, Karo, salt, and sweet milk in a large saucepan.
- Stir until dissolved over low heat.
- Place 1/2 cup sugar in a heavy pan and stir until it browns and turns to syrup.
- Add 3/4 cup water to the syrup and stir.
- Keep on low heat until the lumps dissolve.
- Add the syrup to the first mixture and cook until it forms a soft ball in cold water.
- Add vanilla, cool, and beat well.
