Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 5 tablespoons margarine
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup white raisins
  • 1 egg yolk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  2. Sift flour and baking powder into a medium bowl.
  3. Cut margarine into the flour mixture to form a fine crumble.
  4. Make a well in the center; add milk and raisins.
  5. Gently knead the mixture together, being careful not to overmix. The dough will be sticky.
  6. On a generously floured surface, roll out the dough to 3/4 inch thickness.
  7. Use a pastry cutter to cut out scones.
  8. Transfer the scones to the prepared pan and brush tops with the beaten egg yolk.
  9. Let stand for 15 minutes.
  10. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until risen and lightly golden on top.
  11. Remove from oven and transfer to a rack to cool.
