Ingredients

  • 12 slices day-old bread
  • 6 thick slices cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Arrange 6 slices of bread (crusts trimmed) in a greased 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cover with 6 slices of cheese and then 6 more slices of bread.
  3. Combine eggs, milk, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the assembled sandwiches.
  5. Let stand for 1 hour or more to absorb the flavors.
  6. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 45 minutes until the casserole is brown and puffy.
