Ingredients

  • 2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 lb. butter or margarine
  • 6 Tbsp. water
  • 1 (12 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 to 1 c. chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare a candy thermometer for accurate temperature measurement.
  2. Combine sugar, butter, and water in a heavy saucepan.
  3. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it reaches the hard crack stage (about 300°F / 150°C).
  4. Pour the hot toffee onto a greased baking sheet and spread evenly.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee and let sit for a few minutes until melted.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer.
  7. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top if desired.
  8. Allow toffee to cool completely before breaking into pieces.
