  2. In a Dutch oven, pour 1/4 cup of juice from the raisins.
  3. Add 3 to 4 slices of bread, layer along with 1/2 cup raisins.
  4. Add 1/2 cup of shredded cheese on top of the layers.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using brioche or challah instead of regular white bread. If you prefer a different cheese, try Monterey Jack or even a bit of cream cheese for creaminess. Adjust the sugar based on the sweetness of the raisins. If you want a spicier kick, add a pinch of nutmeg. Ensure the milk is full-fat for a creamier texture.

Serving Suggestions

Capirotada is a comforting dessert that can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. Serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for added indulgence. It pairs beautifully with French Raisin Toast for a delightful brunch spread. Consider serving alongside fresh fruit for a refreshing contrast.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes, covered with foil to prevent drying out. Alternatively, microwave individual portions until heated through, adding a splash of milk for moisture if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of bread?

Absolutely! While white bread is traditional, using brioche or whole grain can add unique flavors and textures. Just ensure the bread is sturdy enough to hold the layers without falling apart.

Is there a way to make this dish vegan?

Yes, you can substitute the milk with almond or oat milk and use a vegan cheese alternative. Replace sugar with maple syrup or coconut sugar for a more natural sweetener.

How can I enhance the flavor of the raisins?

Soaking the raisins in a bit of rum or orange juice before adding them to the dish adds depth and richness. You can also toss them in a bit of cinnamon before layering.
