  • 1 c. chana dal (yellow split peas)
  • 3 c. cold water
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 2 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1 tsp. finely chopped ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped onion
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 whole black peppercorns
  • 1-inch piece cinnamon stick
  • 1 cardamom pod
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp. fenugreek
  • 1 tsp. cumin seed
