Ingredients

  • chocolate wafers
  • 1 envelope gelatin
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Crush chocolate wafers and place in the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan. Save some for topping.
  2. Soften gelatin in 1/4 cup cold water.
  3. Separate eggs.
  4. Beat egg yolks with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  5. Scald milk; add to yolk mixture.
  6. Return to stove and cook slowly until mixture coats a spoon.
  7. While hot, add gelatin and stir until dissolved.
  8. Let the mixture cool.
  9. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  10. Fold in 1 cup whipped cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  11. Pour the mixture over the crushed wafers in the pan.
  12. Sprinkle with remaining wafers for topping.
  13. Set in refrigerator to cool.
