Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Instructions

  1. Rub the butter into the self-rising flour and salt until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  2. Add the sugar and bicarbonate of soda, then gradually mix in the milk or water to form a medium or soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface until smooth.
  4. Mould the dough into a Christmassy shape, such as a wreath or star.
  5. Bake in a hot oven or ashes for about 20 minutes until browned.
  6. Serve warm with butter, jam, honey, or golden syrup.
