Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/3 cup finely grated peeled apple
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground or grated pecans
  • 1/2 to 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 475°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cut shortening into the self-rising flour using a pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Mix in finely grated peeled apple, ground cinnamon, sugar, and ground or grated pecans.
  4. Push the mixture to the edges of the bowl to create a well in the center.
  5. Using a fork, blend in just enough milk (about 1/2 to 2/3 cup) until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  6. Do not overmix, as overblending produces a mealy biscuit rather than flaky layers.
  7. Gently knead the dough if necessary, then shape into biscuit rounds and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.
