Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups quick cooking oats
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soft shortening
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 5 1/2 to 6 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a mixing bowl.
  2. Stir in milk, oats, brown sugar, shortening, salt, raisins, and half the flour. Mix with a spoon until smooth.
  3. Add the rest of the flour and mix with hands to form a dough.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured board.
  5. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top side.
  7. Let rise until doubled in size in a warm place, about 1½ to 2 hours.
  8. Divide the dough into two parts and shape each into a ball.
  9. Roll each into a 15 x 8-inch oblong rectangle.
  10. Sprinkle with a mixture of ½ cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon, setting aside 2 tablespoons of the mixture.
  11. Roll up each rectangle like a jelly roll, sealing tightly at the ends.
