Ingredients

  • 3 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 8 cups peeled apples
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup crushed cornflakes
  • 1 egg white

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour and salt.
  2. Cut in shortening until the mixture is coarse and crumbly.
  3. Add eggs and milk; mix into the dough.
  4. Chill the dough for 20 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough in half.
  6. Roll one half to fit the bottom of a greased 15-inch baking pan.
  7. Arrange peeled and prepared apples over the crust.
  8. Sprinkle crushed cornflakes and cinnamon mixture over apples.
  9. Top with the second rolled dough or leave as is depending on the recipe variation.
  10. Brush beaten egg white over the top crust if used.
  11. Bake until golden and apples are tender.
