Tips & Substitutions

For added depth of flavor, consider using smoked bacon instead of regular. You can substitute the caraway seeds with fennel seeds if you prefer a slightly different taste. If you want a vegetarian version, try omitting the bacon and using vegetable broth instead of water for simmering the sauerkraut.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this sauerkraut alongside roasted meats, especially pork recipes, for a hearty meal. It also pairs well with mashed potatoes or crusty bread. For a complete dinner, consider serving with John'S Portuguese Bean Soup for a comforting combination.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To reheat, place the sauerkraut mixture in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through. You can also microwave it in short intervals, ensuring it's heated evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh sauerkraut instead of jarred?

Yes, you can use fresh sauerkraut. Just make sure to rinse it to remove excess salt and adjust the water quantity accordingly as fresh sauerkraut may release more liquid during cooking.

What can I do if the dish is too sour?

If the sauerkraut is too sour for your taste, you can add a bit more brown sugar to balance the flavors. Adding a splash of apple cider vinegar can also help to cut the acidity without overwhelming the dish.

Is there a way to make this dish spicy?

To add some heat, consider incorporating red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce into the bacon-onion mixture. You could also serve it with a side of spicy mustard for an extra kick.
