Tips & Substitutions
For a fluffier bread, ensure your yeast is fresh and properly proofed. If using alternative grains like oatmeal or cornmeal, consider using a mix of whole wheat flour for added texture. You can substitute sugar with honey or molasses for a deeper flavor. A splash of olive oil enhances moisture and richness. Adjust the liquid amount based on the type of flour used; some absorb more than others.
Serving Suggestions
This Daily Bread is perfect as a side for soups or stews, such as Back Forty Stew, or enjoyed with Dipping Mustard Sauce For Ribs. Slice it for sandwiches or serve warm with butter for breakfast. Pairs beautifully with Emmy'S Pasta Salad for a delightful meal. You can also toast slices and top them with jams or spreads for a quick snack.
Storage & Reheating
Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, wrap tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to three months. To reheat, simply place the bread in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through. This helps retain its crusty exterior and soft interior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use whole wheat flour instead of plain flour?
Yes, you can substitute whole wheat flour for plain flour, but it may result in a denser loaf. It’s often best to use a mix of whole wheat and all-purpose flour for a lighter texture. You might need to adjust the liquid slightly, as whole wheat flour absorbs more moisture.
How do I know when the bread is done baking?
The bread is done when it has a golden-brown crust and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. For rolls, they typically bake for 8 to 10 minutes, while loaves take 20 to 30 minutes. Always check the internal temperature; it should reach about 190°F for fully baked bread.
Can I make this recipe vegan?
Absolutely! This recipe can easily be made vegan by using vegetable oil instead of butter and omitting any dairy in the liquid. Water or plant-based milk work well. The sugar can also be substituted with agave syrup or another vegan sweetener of your choice.
