Ingredients

  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 6 Tbsp. cold water

Instructions

  1. Combine flour and salt in a bowl.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough is moist enough to gather into a ball.
  4. Knead the dough gently a few times.
  5. Pinch off pieces of dough and shape into 1-inch balls.
  6. Roll each ball between hands to form a 10-inch rope.
  7. Shape each rope into a pretzel form.
  8. Set the pretzels on waxed paper.
  9. Heat shortening to 365°F.
  10. Fry 3 pretzels at a time for about 3 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with coarse salt.
